UNIMA signs MOU with Tanzanian University

The University of Malawi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mzumbe University of Tanzania which will see the two universities collaborating in various areas. The agreement was signed when a delegation from Mzumbe University visited UNIMA from 20th to 21st February, 2023.

Welcoming the delegation to UNIMA campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samson Sajidu, emphasized that the partnership directly feeds into the university’s plans for internationalization and noted that this will help in exposing UNIMA in the region.

Nowadays, universities are not supposed to be working in silos. It is required that we should be global. For UNIMA, within our strategic plan we have prioritized internationalization. Through this collaboration, we will benefit through collaborative research, student and staff exchange, and joint degree programmes,” said Sajidu.

Sajidu observed that it will be easy to operationalize this collaboration immediately as almost all enabling instruments are already in place.

Principal for Mzumbe University’s Mbeya Campus College, Prof. Henry Mollel, said the partnership will help their university in boosting its regional reach.

Working alone, we may not be able to explore much of the potential we have in the region. We believe if we reignite the relationship we already had with the University of Malawi, we will create synergy that will give us an opportunity to do a lot of things such as exposing our students to the regional context in terms of cultural exchange and experiences,” said Mollel.

Mzumbe University’s Director of Internationalization and Communication, Lucy Massoi, said the partnership between the two universities will help them tap into various opportunities available in the African region.

There are some intra-Africa grant opportunities which require universities to partner and apply as a consortium. This partnership will therefore help us in exploring such opportunities. Working together will also help us, as a region, in addressing some issues that are common in our countries,” said Massoi.

Mzumbe University is comprised of three campuses based at Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Mbeya. The entourage that visited UNIMA was from the university’s Mbeya campus.

UNIMA has MOUs with several institutions within the region.
