LEG recognizes top performing Law students

It is evident that the University of Malawi Management places great importance on acknowledging and celebrating exceptional students. On November 21, 2023, the School of Law, Economics, and Government, particularly the Law section, took a moment to recognize the 62 top performers among diploma and degree program students for the academic year 2022/2023. The top-performing students received certificates of recognition, and in addition, each of them received K25,000.

The excellence awards were granted to various categories of students, including those who showed significant improvement, those who achieved a credit level Grade Point Average (GPA) and earned a place on the Head’s list, as well as students who participated in the International Moot Court and those who represented UNIMA at the DNC Chambers Inter-University Court Moot Competition.

The quadrangle at the Law section was filled with indescribable joy as awardees gathered, accompanied by other students who joined to celebrate the significant achievements of their peers.

Speaking during the awards presentation, the Guest of Honor, His Lordship Justice Allan Hans Muhome, Judge of the High Court of Malawi, was thrilled as he addressed the students. He congratulated the awardees and encouraged all students to work diligently, emphasizing that the industry eagerly awaits their contributions. Justice Muhome outlined his expectations for the students, expressing confidence in their ability to apply ethical standards and to practice law with passion for Malawian society. Lastly, he emphasized that with the training the students are receiving in their legal studies, the school expects them to work in various capacities, including within government departments and beyond Malawi.

On his part, the Executive Dean of the School of Law, Economics, and Government, Professor Happy Kayuni, highlighted the importance of the excellence awards, noting that they serve as a motivating force for the students. Professor Kayuni elaborated on how acknowledging top performers sends a powerful message to the students, recognizing and celebrating their accomplishments. Furthermore, he commended Law students for their sustained excellence, emphasizing the brilliance and success of UNIMA graduates in their various workplaces.

After receiving recognition for attaining a Credit GPA level, Ashleighn Banda (Bachelor of Laws, third year) stated that the recognition has definitely provided her with the drive and commitment to fully dedicate herself to her studies. Furthermore, she mentioned that the recognition has also served as a powerful reminder that hard work, alongside a group of friends committed to doing better, will always lead to success. 

Concluding the ceremony, the Law section warmly welcomed its first-year students who have recently the joined program.
