The current Dean of Social Science, is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics. Prior to being appointed Dean, he held the positions of Deputy Dean of Social Science and Deputy Head of Economics Department.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics (2001) and a Master of Arts degree in Economics (2003) from the University of Malawi. His PhD (2009) was obtained from the Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany where he studied poverty and vulnerability among small scale fishers in the Lake Chad Basin in Nigeria.
Dr. Chiwaula has been an active researcher in a number of projects. He is the Project Leader of the Nsomba N’Chuma Project, which involves research on improved processing and marketing of healthy fish products in inland fisheries in Malawi. He is currently involved in the PURE Malawi project, aimed at Improving uptake and retention in PMTCT services through family supported care and novel approaches in community peer-outreach support in Malawi. He has also been a researcher in the Lablite Project, which aims to optimise clinical care, treatment strategies, and the use of laboratories for ART Roll Out in Africa. It is funded by DFID and coordinated by the UK’s Medical Research Council-Clinical Trials Unit.
He has published in many refereed journals such as the Journal of Development Studies, Journal of International Development, Health Economics Review and the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.
